Monterey Bay Aquarium – 2010

Today we took Haruka and Fumika to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Despite the large crowds they really enjoyed looking at all of the exhibits and getting to touch some of the tide pool creatures. Another favorite of theirs was the penguin and sea turtle displays. After spending a few hours at the aquarium we drove down to Fisherman’s Wharf for lunch. After confirming that they liked the clam chowder samples we found a restaurant with a table near a window […]

Yosemite National Park

This morning we headed up to Yosemite National Park to show the girls one of the many scenic wonders we’re fortunate to have in our backyard. We left at 8:00am and made good time getting up to the park, but spent an hour driving the last two miles getting to the gate. We didn’t have a choice, but you should try to avoid going to Yosemite on a weekend in the middle of summer. Once we got into the park […]

Pacific Coast Highway

Today I headed back down to Southern California for an extended weekend visit with a friend who’s stationed in San Diego with the Navy. We’re friends back from high school and have kept in touch over the years. We see each other off and on depending on where he’s stationed. Sometimes a few years pass in between visits. His family is still up in the state of Washington so his kids can finish school there so for the time being […]

Yosemite National Park – 2010

For the past few years I’ve wanted to drive up to Yosemite National Park when there is snow on the ground. I’ve been to Yosemite many times, but never when there is snow in the Valley. There are a couple of reasons why I haven’t made it up there to see the snow. One problem is the fact that snow doesn’t stay long in the Valley when it does happen, and another is that the roads usually require chains leading […]

Pinnacles National Monument

I’d seen signs for Pinnacles National Monument a few times while traveling up and down California’s highways, but never paid much attention to them. The lady that cuts my hair mentioned that she’d just gone and thought it was a nice place to go for a hike and take in the scenery. There’s also a chance to spot a rare California Condor since the park is used as a release spot for the birds that are born in captivity. In […]

Daffodil Hill

Each Spring there is a small family run farm up in the foothills that opens up to the public for a few weeks when the spring flowers are in bloom. Over the years the family has planted over 300,000 daffodil bulbs and named the hill “Daffodil Hill”. When approximately 25% of the blooms are out they open up the farm to the public and remain open until about 25% of the blooms remain. This usually equates to about 3 to […]

Pacific Coast

My quick drive out to the coast a week ago left me wanting to do it again. I had a last minute quick trip down to So Cal a few days ago so I had my opportunity. I normally would take Interstate 5 down to LA, but instead of taking the quick route (4 1/2 hours) back home I decided to take a detour and drive back up along the coast. This adds about 180 miles to the trip and […]

Kennedy Space Center

So, what did you do last weekend? Me? I finally did something that I’d been wanting to do for a very, very long time. I almost waited too long, though. 2010 marks the last year that the Space Shuttle program will be in operation with only 5 launches remaining on the schedule. The first of the five launches would also be the last night launch for the shuttle program. We hopped online about 30 days prior to the launch when […]
